Rig watchstanders are the first line of defense when it comes to emergencies at sea. They need a clear understanding of emergency procedures and communication expertise in order to effectively mitigate an emergency when it arises.
Bridge Emergency Management (BEM) is a five day course that provides immediate emergency response training for the Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO), Ballast Control Operator (BCO), Control Room Operators (CRO), Third Mate and any other discipline whose requirements include bridge watchstanding. These personnel will acquire the knowledge, judgment, and skillset necessary to understand and react to all emergencies before the Master, Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) and Emergency Response Team (ERT) arrive on the bridge.
This course reflects and reinforces watchkeeping concepts through case studies and simulation of emergency exercises. Emergency exercises are scripted with expansive role-play that is designed to provide bridge personnel with skills, modeled from the military services, unique to effectively commanding and communicating in emergency situations. Thorough post-simulation debriefs are guided and facilitated by expert maritime emergency managers to ensure review of events in the emergency simulation and identify and examine actions on the bridge. This program provides appraisals for each student and can accommodate formal assessments on a needs basis.
